JAWAPAN KEPADA CEO THE STAR

What Ex Star Journalist says:

Komen:

Zam,

I'm sure that as a former newspaper man, you would know that whilst the ownership of a newspaper may be of a certain political orientation, there's no sure way to ensure that the journalists and editors are of the same political orientation but instead could be of the opposite orientation.

I've worked at The Star for over 11 years and know fully well that many of its journalists and editors, including myself were anti-establishment and pro-opposition and would try to "push the envelope" to get a message critical of the establishment past the editor's filters and published. It was a bit of a cat & mouse game between such journalists and the editors or the editorial policy at the time.

Today it seems that whilst The Star is owned by the MCA, but its editorial content serve the interests of the DAP, so what's the MCA going to do about this or how can it deal with it?  More in the Comment.

NO CAUSE FOR PRANOIA

Wong Chun WaiWong Chun Wai began his career as a journalist in Penang, and has served The Star for over 27 years in various capacities and roles. He is now the group's managing director/chief executive officer and formerly the group chief editor.

Singapore evangelists found guilty in first sedition trial

Published 02 June 2009
A Christian couple has been found guilty of distributing seditious or objectionable material to three Muslims and being in possession of seditious publications.

The case of Ong Kian Cheong, a SingTel technical officer, and Dorothy Chan Hien Leng, a UBS associate director, marks the first time in the republic that a full trial under the Sedition Act has been heard.

In 2005, a man was jailed for a month for posting inflammatory and vicious remarks about Muslims and Malays on the internet. The following year, an accounts assistant received a stern warning for posting an offensive cartoon of Jesus Christ on his blog.

For many years, Ong and Chan had been involved in mass-mailing evangelistic tracts to members of the public. Three recipients of some of the booklets found them seditious or objectionable and lodged complaints.

They received the two evangelistic tracts titled The Little Bride or Who Is Allah? in December last year and told the court they felt angry, insulted and offended and believed a Christian group had sent them.

Ong and Chan were arrested on January 30 last year. The couple was also found to be in possession of 439 copies of 11 publications deemed sedicious at their Maplewoods Condominium.

The trial revolved around whether the couple knew or had reason to believe the publications they mailed to the three plaintiffs were seditious.

The prosecution had alleged that they were fully aware of the offensive nature of the contents and distributed those offensive publications to members of different faiths in Singapore with no regard for their feelings or sensitivities, according to the Straits Times.

Ong and Chan, however, claimed they had not read nor know what the tracts in question contained. Moreover, they added, they did not have reason to believe that the 11 tracts were seditious since they were openly sold at the Tecman bookstore in Bras Basah Complex.

District judge Roy Neighbour rejected their defence on the grounds that the two tracts received by the three plaintiffs had been “ordered regularly and in bulk for over two decades” since 1987. Underscoring that they are educated and intelligent people, the judge said they “would have known” that the publications “had a serious seditious tendency because the tracts are not only highly critical but denigrate Islam, the Roman Catholic Church and other religions”, reported Today.

He also disbelieved Chan’s claim that she had “randomly” sent them out, saying that “in a multi-racial society like Singapore, a name can reveal a person’s race and possibly religion”.

“It is plain (they) were watering down their roles in the commission of the offences,” said the judge.

The case was adjourned until Thursday for mitigation and possible sentencing.

Under the Sedition Act, anything that has a tendency to promote feelings of ill-will and hostility between different races or classes of the population of Singapore is considered seditious.

For distributing a seditious publication, the couple faces a fine of up to $5,000 and jail for up to three years on each of two charges.

TINDAKAN-TINDAKAN  SINGAPORE TERHADAP PELAMPAU KRISTIAN.

In 1972 the Singapore government de-registered and banned the activities of Jehovah's Witnesses on the grounds that its members refuse to perform military service (which is obligatory for all male citizens), salute the flag, or swear oaths of allegiance to the state.[50][51] Singapore has banned all written materials (including Bibles) published by the International Bible Students Association and the Watchtower Bible and Tract Society, both publishing arms of the Jehovah's Witnesses. A person in possession of banned literature can be fined up to S$2,000 (US$1,460) and jailed up to 12 months for a first conviction.[52]
In February 1995, Singapore police raided private homes where group members were holding religious meetings, in an operation codenamed "Operation Hope". Officers seized Bibles, religious literature, documents and computers, and eventually brought charges against 69 Jehovah's Witnesses, many of whom went to jail.[53][54] In March 1995, 74-year-old Yu Nguk Ding was arrested for carrying two "undesirable publications"—one of them a Bible printed by the Watch Tower Society.[55]
In 1996, eighteen Jehovah's Witnesses were convicted for unlawfully meeting in a Singapore apartment and were given sentences from one to four weeks in jail.[56] Canadian Queen's Counsel Glen How flew to Singapore to defend the Jehovah's Witnesses and argued that the restrictions against the Jehovah's Witnesses violated their constitutional rights. Then-Chief Justice Yong Pung How questioned How's sanity, accused him of "living in a cartoon world" and referred to "funny, cranky religious groups" before denying the appeal.[53] In 1998, two Jehovah's Witnesses were charged in a Singapore court for possessing and distributing banned religious publications.[57]
In 1998 a Jehovah's Witness lost a law suit against a government school for wrongful dismissal for refusing to sing the national anthem or salute the flag. In March 1999, the Court of Appeals denied his appeal.[50] In 2000, public secondary schools indefinitely suspended at least fifteen Jehovah's Witness students for refusing to sing the national anthem or participate in the flag ceremony.[58] In April 2001, one public school teacher, also a member of Jehovah's Witnesses, resigned after being threatened with dismissal for refusing to participate in singing the national anthem.[50]
Singapore authorities have seized Jehovah's Witnesses' literature on various occasions from individuals attempting to cross the Malaysia-Singapore border. In thirteen cases, authorities warned the Jehovah's Witnesses, but did not press charges.[58][59][60]
As of 2008, there were 23 members of Jehovah's Witnesses incarcerated in the armed forces detention barracks for refusal to carry out mandatory military service. The initial sentence for failure to comply is 15 months' imprisonment, with an additional 24 months for a second refusal. All of the Jehovah's Witnesses in detention were incarcerated for failing to perform their initial military obligations and expect to serve a total of 39 months.[60] Failure to perform annual military reserve duty, which is required of all those who have completed their initial 2-year obligation, results in a 40-day sentence, with a 12-month sentence after four refusals.[60][61] There is no alternative civilian service for Jehovah's Witnesses.
In 2008–2009, the Singapore government declined to make data available to the public concerning arrests of Jehovah's Witnesses.[62][63]

  7. It is interesting to read a lengthy explanation by Zam on how The Star manipulated the events in the name of ‘freedom’ with those members plenty come from the ‘liberals, secularists and moderates’ in that company. It is also interesting to note that as a long time ‘strategic partnership’ between Utusan and The Star (correct me if I’m wrong) in the face of challenging the NST groups, this relationships is now could be seen as dead. Unless Utusan would not mine to continue the good relationship as before which reflecting the failure of Utusan editors to detect such unscrupulous act of their friends – The Star. Zam exposition in this case means something is also not correct in Utusan too. Did they realize how ‘ulaq’ The Star could be when driving their racist agenda and destroying the Islam via Christianity paranoids? What transpired me to know is why till now Utusan is still mingling with The Star knowing that they are manipulating the events with hidden agendas that are detrimental to the harmony and unity of the people in this country? We acknowledge The Star as bazaar language news with dominantly exposing the unfriendly news towards the government, which is why it becomes so popular among the non-Malays and oppositions, but now becoming so obvious of being anti to the government and Islam. Only those who read below the line of news printed by The Star could understand the actual motives of the news published. But again, what our own government is doing to stop all this from corroding the Islamic and Malay institutions? Did the PM Najib realize what actually is now being done and the consequences of such happening? As the BN government is getting weaker, we too could not effort to have weak leaders in confronting such cases. Indeed it’s no longer becoming an issue anymore. Home Minister, Zahid, could not act tough due to the warning by Najib (thru his running boy) and now the case become despicable to tackle. Are we too weak to settle this or another compromising agenda takes place as PM Najib is famous of delaying or abandoning cases to be forgotten sake? My goodness….

Yes, it could set a firm and clear editorial policy, rein in the editors and require them to strictly abide by the editorial policy.

However, the drawback here is that many of its readers will defect to other publications, which The Star can ill-afford, especially when its fighting to stop the drop in its circulation and advertising revenues.

Also, its anti-establishment stance could also be commercial, since partisan political positions seem to sell papers and attract eyeballs to websites.

This could very well be the case of Utusan too, which caters to a pro-establishment readership market segment, whilst The Star caters to an anti-establishment segment of the readership market.

As for the collaboration between The Star and Utusan, who are seemingly on opposite sides of the political divide, that collaboration is more of a clinical business decision, standing above the political fray, where the journalists are allowed, even required, to keep circulation numbers and advertising ringgit up by constantly feeding their target segment of readers with what the want to hear.

Most importantly it divides the people as what the DAP wanted it. The Star only lost the credibility and moral values as anti government establishment but not as liberal, secularist and moderates which they wish for without taking into accounts of the majority.

Wong boleh kata apa dia suka...dia punya hak....cuma org Melayu yg BENDUL DAN TULI SERTA PEKAK seperti puak Pas..

Mulut cakap lain....tingkah laku serupa saja dgn DAP.

Sesungguh nya Melayu sangat sedih sekarang. Pimpinan PM Najib berbaur kemungkaran.

Kalau buku2 tu bukan tulisan oreintalists, si Ah Wai rasanya tak baca pun buku2 tu.

BTW, syabas Tan Sri, teruskan membogelkan si Ah Wai tu sehingga tidak tinggal seurat benang pun.

Setuju pandangan hidup melayu.

JAWAPAN YG SY DAPAT...DARI 20 MENTERI DAN TIMB....CUMA 5 ATAU 6 ORNG SAJA YG DIKIRA OK..ADA CIRI2 KETUA....TINGGI JATI DIRI.. TIADA KONTROVERSI...JUJUR..PERIHATIN TERHADAP BANGSA DAN UGAMA DAN BERSIH....
      ...SELEBIHNYA..HAMBAR SAHAJA..

      Terima kasih.

  15. According to Confucius:
    * * “Where everyone despises a person, you must look into the matter carefully; when everyone celebrates a person, you must also look into it carefully.”
    * * “Exemplary persons understand what is appropriate; petty persons understand what is of personal advantage.”
    * * “Wealth and honor are what people desire, but if these things result from forsaking the Tao (the straight path, “The Way”), then I would have no part in them. Poverty and disgrace are what people deplore, but if these are the consequences of staying true to "The Way", I would not avoid them.”

Which paths are we walking to our death? We believe that every soul will have to face the Day of Judgement - a liberal or secular person notwithstanding. He shall not enter into heaven's gates who has so much as a grain of arrogance in his heart.
